What is school-based Occupational and Physical Therapy?

Under IDEA 97 and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, occupational and physical therapy are a related services provided to help children with an educational disability benefit from his/her special education program in the least restrictive learning environment.

Physical therapists help by exploring, recommending, developing and/or providing student strategies and modifications to support access to their school environment.

The profession of Occupational Therapy is built on the principle of affirming the importance of engaging in meaningful daily life activities or occupations. Occupational therapists use their unique expertise to help children fulfill their individual roles required to access and participate in their natural environments. Occupational therapists (OT) support students/families/caregivers/school staff with appropriate modifications or adaptations of materials/environments.

OTs provide consultation to classroom teachers to assist with appropriate modifications and/or assistive technology tools for struggling writers. OTs also help support students who have sensory processing difficulties in providing consultation for environmental adaptations and/or sensory tools.
